So how does acoustic leak detection work?

The vibrations made by water leaks are transmitted through the water pipes and to the surface of the ground, which we can then pick up with the listening device on our acoustic leak detection equipment.

The range of sounds that can be heard are dependent upon the soil depth, type and compaction, the water pressure inside the pipe, the pipe material and the covering over the pipe, ie. concrete, grass, rubble etc.

Different pipe materials, ie metal, copper, steel, PVC or cement pipes, transmit different sound frequencies, and some are easier to detect than others.

We can usually locate bursts within approximately a 1 – 2 metre radius.  It’s not an exact science, , but we can get pretty close – and it’s much easier than digging up your entire yard!
