Trouble shooting a gas log fire that won’t stay lit

Gas Log Fires | Geelong | Torquay | Tomlinson Plumbing

There’s nothing more frustrating on a cold evening than turning on your gas log fire, only for the flame to go out after a few seconds. It’s a common problem we get called out to, and in most cases, it comes down to a few key issues inside the unit. Here’s a few things that could be happening:

A Dirty or Blocked Pilot Light

The pilot light is the small flame that ignites the main burner. Over time, dust, lint, insects and debris can build up around it, preventing it from staying alight.

Common signs:

• The flame looks weak or yellow instead of strong and blue
• The fire ignites but quickly dies out
• You hear clicking but the flame doesn’t hold
This is one of the most frequent reasons a gas log fire won’t stay lit — especially if it hasn’t been serviced in a while.

A Faulty or Dirty Thermocouple / Flame Sensor

The thermocouple (or flame sensor, depending on the model) is a safety device that detects whether the flame is actually burning.
If it can’t properly sense the flame — often due to dirt, corrosion, or misalignment — it automatically shuts off the gas supply.

Symptoms include:

• Fire lights but cuts out after 5–10 seconds
• You have to keep holding the control knob for longer than usual
• The pilot won’t stay on once you release it

This is another issue that requires a technician to clean, adjust or replace the component safely.

Issues With the Gas Supply

If your gas pressure is too low or the supply is inconsistent, the fire may not stay lit.

Possible causes include:

• Problems with the gas regulator
• Kinks in the gas line
• Supply issues from the meter
• A partially closed isolation valve
Gas supply issues should always be checked by a licensed gas fitter.

A Faulty Ignition System or Control Board

Modern gas log fires often use electronic ignition.
If the igniter, wiring or control board develops a fault, the flame may light briefly but fail to stay on.
This is another situation where DIY repairs aren’t recommended — incorrect handling can damage components or create a safety hazard.

So, Can You Fix It Yourself?

Beyond making sure nothing is blocking the front of the heater and checking your remote batteries (if your unit used remote ignition), leave it to a licensed gas fitter.
Gas log fires contain safety sensors for a reason — and if the flame won’t stay lit, something inside the unit is malfunctioning.
DIY attempts can lead to gas leaks, damaged components or voided warranties.
