This was one of the worst cases of carbon monoxide spillage I have ever seen. See the black marks on the ceiling? These marks covered the entire ceiling in that room and adjoining rooms. It's carbon from a massive hole in the heat exchange.
The homeowner is extremely lucky to be alive. He was experiencing all the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning without realising it, as was his daughter, who would come to stay on the weekends. They had been using the heater for a long time like this and were just so very lucky that they always turned it off before going to bed.
It's so important to have your gas heaters regularly serviced and safety checked - at least every 2 years. Little issues can be picked up and nipped in the bud before they become bigger (potentially deadly) issues.
