Why is that valve on my hot water heater leaking?

A PTR valve is a ‘pressure temperature relief’ valve. Sometimes it’s also called a TPR valve. It’s a safety device that is fitted to a hot water heater and it releases water if the temperature or pressure becomes too high.

It also ensures that the temperature of the water in your hot water unit (which is pressurised and unvented) does not exceed 99 degrees celcius, in the event that the normal thermostatic controls fail. This is an Australian Standard requirement.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It can be normal for your valve to drip a little at times, however, if it is dripping continually, or you notice the area around your hot water heater is wet, your valve may need to be replaced by a plumber. ⠀
