Is your tap leaking, or is it just ‘trailing waste’?

There have been so many times when we’ve been called out to fix a leaking tap, when in fact, it’s just trailing waste. Some taps have trailing waste, and others don’t (it depends on the design), and the confusion usually occurs when the home-owner replaces their tapware to a new style.

Trailing waste refers to the small amount of water that continues to flow from the tap immediately after it has been turned off. This is the residual water left in the spout, which drips or trails out after the valve within the tap has been closed.  It occurs as the remaining water in the tap’s spout exits due to gravity.

Trailing waste is generally minimal and not a sign of a problem with the tap. It’s a normal part of the tap's operation and doesn’t indicate leakage.

A leaking tap is one where water continuously drips or flows from the spout after the tap is fully turned off.

This usually happens due to a worn-out washer, O-ring, or seal, or due to corrosion or damage to the valve seat. The tap fails to fully close, allowing water to continuously escape.

Leaking taps are usually a straight-forward fix, although sometimes the tap may need to be replaced, depending on the issue.
