The importance of servicing your gas heater ~ and checking for carbon monoxide

Gas Heater Servicing & Carbon Monoxide Testing | Tomlinson Plumbing | Torquay | Geelong | Ocean Grove | Barwon Heads

As the cooler weather settles in across our region, it’s a good time to think about whether your heating system is operating safely and efficiently.

Regular gas heater servicing is so important. It helps keep your home comfortable, your heater running at its best, and your family safe.

Why Regular Servicing Matters

Gas heaters, like all appliances, need routine maintenance. Over time, dust, wear and tear, and general use can cause components to degrade or become less efficient. Servicing your gas heater regularly helps to:

  • Keep it running efficiently, which can help reduce energy bills
  • Extend the life of the appliance
  • Prevent unexpected breakdowns
  • Ensure it is operating safely.

What About Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a natural by-product of gas combustion. When your heater is working properly, it vents this gas safely outdoors. But if there’s a fault in the system or changes in ventilation, carbon monoxide can build up indoors.

CO is odourless and invisible, which is why regular testing is important. We don’t raise this to cause alarm ~ we do see quite a few heaters each year emitting CO, but CO issues are not very common in homes where appliances are serviced regularly. It’s simply a matter of being proactive.

What’s Involved in a Gas Heater Service?

When you book a gas heater service we carry out a thorough inspection and testing process. There is a legislated 31 point checklist that we have to work through, which identifies any wear or potential faults.

It’s all about ensuring your heater is working safely and effectively – with no nasty surprises.

How Often Should You Service Your Heater?

We recommend having your gas heater serviced at least every 2 years. If your unit is older or hasn’t been checked in a while, it’s a good idea to schedule a service sooner rather than later.

Also keep an eye out for these signs that your heater may need attention:

  • Yellow or flickering flame (should normally be blue) on gas log fires or space heaters.
  • Soot stains around the appliance
  • Physical symptoms like headaches or nausea when the heater is running
  • Heater turning off unexpectedly or struggling to start
