Is your gas log fire igniting, but shutting off after a minute or less?

Here are some pointers that may help with your gas log fire issue....

Observe the Flame

  • Does the pilot light stay on?
  • Does the main burner flame look strong and stable?
  • Is the flame yellow and lazy, or blue and sharp?

A weak or flickering flame may indicate a dirty pilot or low gas pressure.

Listen for Clicking or Unusual Noises

  • Do you hear clicking before it shuts off?
  • Is there a whooshing or puffing sound?

Clicking may signal the safety valve shutting off due to sensor issues.

Look for Error Lights or Codes (if applicable)

  • Is there a flashing light or error code on the control panel?
  • How many times does it flash? (This can indicate a specific fault.)

Some units have diagnostic LEDs – note the pattern and check your user guide before restarting the unit.

Check for Drafts or Blocked Airflow

  • Are the air vents or grilles clear and unobstructed?
  • Is there a cold draft nearby that could be blowing out the flame?

Blocked air intakes or strong drafts can disrupt combustion.

Time the Shutoff

  • How many seconds or minutes does the unit stay on before shutting off?
  • Does it always shut off at the same time, or is it random?

Consistent shut-off timing points to a sensor issue. Random shut-off may suggest wiring or control board faults.

When Was It Last Serviced?

Dust, cobwebs, and debris in the fan, burner or sensor area are very common culprits.
