What is a tempering valve?
A tempering valve blends hot water from your hot water system with cold water before it reaches your taps, so the water comes out at a safe temperature - usually around 50°C.
This is important because:
- Your hot water unit stores water at 60°C or higher to kill bacteria such as Legionella.
- Without a tempering valve, that scalding hot water could reach your taps and cause serious burns in seconds.
How tempering valves keep you safe

- Protect children, the elderly, and anyone with reduced sensitivity to heat.
- Reduce the risk of sudden bursts of dangerously hot water

It's not just a good idea - it's the Law
In Australia, the Plumbing Code and Australian Standards require tempering valves to be installed when a new or replacement hot water unit is fitted in residential homes (with some exceptions for certain commercial or industrial systems).
If you're replacing your hot water unit, your plumber islegally required to ensure a compliant tempering valve is installed.
Tempering Valves aren't "Set and Forget"
Over time, the moving parts inside a tempering valve can wear out, especially in areas with hard water or sediment. A faulty valve might cause:
- Water that's too hot or too cold
- Fluctuating temperature
- Low water flow
- Constantly having to adjust taps to get the right temperature
Typical lifespan: 5 - 8 years, depending on water quality and usage.
