Hot water safety
In the years between 2001 and 2013, 59 fatalities were recorded as a result of scalding from mains supply heated water. Most scalding fatalities occurred in private dwellings and were elderly people.
It takes just 3 seconds to receive a second degree burn from water heated to 60 degrees, and 5 seconds for a third degree burn. Whereas, with water heated to 50 degrees, it would take about 7 and 9 minutes respectively to receive second and third degree burns.
This is why tempering valves play such a vital role in our hot water management – they help to prevent injuries and save lives.
So, what does a tempering valve actually do, I hear you ask?
A tempering valve takes the hot water from your storage hot water system (which is usually stored at around 60-65 degrees to prevent the growth of legionella bacteria) and the cold water supply, and it mixes them to create a tempered hot water supply limited to 50 degrees, therefore, substantially reducing the risk of scalding.
It’s a fantastic little piece of engineering.
