A fire waiting to happen
To the untrained eye, this flue might just look like it has been well used, with a few black marks from years of use.
But this flue was a disaster waiting to happen.
The installation of the active section of the flue had not been riveted together. When the flue was routinely cleaned/swept, it was dislodged, which then caused the flames to flicker onto the back of the decorative mesh heat shield. This was a fire waiting to happen and it was just pure luck that the homeowners decided to upgrade their wood heater when they did.
The plumber you engage for your wood heater installation needs to have the 'Mechanical Services' tick on their licence. Don't feel awkward - just ask to see their licence.
